The Safety Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, celebrated its sports victory at the Security Headquarters, Awka, on Friday, September 12, 2025. The celebration commemorated the department's outstanding performance, where they emerged overall winners in the recently concluded university staff games.
In his opening remarks, Chief Ken Chukwurah, Chief Safety Officer, expressed profound gratitude to God for the victory, he appreciated the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Coral Arinze-Umobi, for her motherly leadership and the positive impact felt by the university community. The CSO also commended the university management for implementing policies that prioritize student safety. Chief Chukwurah emphasized the importance of a conducive and peaceful environment for researching and learning, crediting the safety department's diligence for ensuring a secure campus. However, he noted that challenges persist and urged the state government to enhance security measures in surrounding areas, such as Ifite-Awka and neighboring villages, to further safeguard students living outside campus.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, Mr. Okey Ikegbunam, Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs, congratulated the safety department on their achievement, praising their unity and initiative in celebrating their success
.
In their separate goodwill messages, Prof. Makodi Biereenu-Nnabugwu, Dean of Student Affairs; Prof. Stella Anasi, represented by Mrs. Mbakwe Adaora; Acting Director of Sports, Mrs. Anthonia Chukwudi; and Prof. Derek Orji, Chairman of the Sports Committee, all commended the department's foresight in celebrating their victory.
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of awards and medals to the department's personnel and staff who participated in the staff games and cultural display.
